#93 - 13th July 2024 - Live Drums and Stage Boxes
Today was another tech day. We set up the new drum micing, arranged acoustic kit drum parts vs sample trigger pad parts and checked the Midas Out Box that arrived from Thomann this week.
Mic setup for Drums:
- Kick: Audio Technica ATM250DE
- Snare: Beyerdynamic M201 TG
- Wurst: SM57
- OH: ... I honestly don't know - but I believe Shure small diaphragm condensers
OH was set to Glyn Johns which gives a really big sound stage. So it's not surprising that the OH mics alone create such a great representation of the kit, it is astonishing. The kick drum mic is still important but all the rest is just support. I'm quite certain that we could easily drop the separate Snare mic.
Kick and Snare also trigger the Roland Sample Pad and whatever sample is loaded based on the song we're playing. With a little reverb on it, It sounds huge :)
The whole business of playing acoustic vs sample drums was also figured out today. This sets us up to be playing "live" really soon. We're planning on streaming a session when the next track releases.
Finally, we installed the Midas DN4816-O which is an extension to the Midas MR18 interface we're using already. The whole purpose of the DN4816-O is to easily route the pure, unprocessed signals we're getting from our instruments to the Front-Of-House signal processing. That is necessary so that we can use the other "outs" on the MR18 for our stage mixes per person.
I'll do an updated drawing of the wiring at some point...
Oh, and we've had cake. What a day!
