#83 - 3rd July 2024 - Them Crooked Vultures

Right after peak Foo Fighters (sorry new kids) and post Era Vulgaris which I did not understand at the time but love to death and back today, three people from three of my favorite bands formed a super group.

That's something you don't really find anymore these days. I mean who listens to bands anyway?

What would a DJ super group look like? David Guetta trying to fit his USB stick into Calvin Harris' and then melting it with Steve Garrix' light show? Not even the Power Rangers would manage this.

Yes, this is a boomer post. Go vape if you don't like it.

So back when music was real (🙄) people like John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin, QOTSA's very own Josh Homme and the walking groove machine Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) formed "Them Crooked Vultures".

Oh and what a brilliant, somewhat inaccessible album they put out. Odd, dreamy, groovy and in your face. Obviously an afterbirth of Era Vulgaris.

Here is a great live performance they played in Germany in 2009.

I think my favorite part of the entire album is the second half of Spinning in Daffodils. The riff is right up my alley, Dave's drumming is stellar and John just does his thing. Important to mention that Alain Johannes supports them live. He can often be found with the Desert Sessions crowd around Josh Homme, is a fantastic guitar player and has some great tracks of his own, like Centipede which I think is on the album Dave Grohl made for the Sound City documentary.

Ahh, so much to talk about. This could easily be extended into Nirvana (pun intended).

Okay, one more: Thinking about JPJ made me watch the Achilles Last Stand performance at Knebworth from '79 😲. Best Led Zeppelin song :D
