#184 - 12th October 2024 - Working on the sound pallet
The Nord Drum 3p was sitting idle for about a year now.
Last year, when I got it, I had the idea to learn to play drums. I bought sticks, two practice pads and the 3p with a kick drum pedal.
Also, I wasn‘t getting the Nord for its own sounds predominantly but rather because its pads are supposed to be among the best. And the alternatives - like the Roland one - burst even deeper holes in your pocket.
Then cursed bunny happened and I went full on pop music production.
A year later, sound exploration is back on the agenda and I'm realizing the Nord Drum is a sonic beast.
With a little bit of distortion and other FX tweaking it can sit in the realm of industrial drums really well. And it can be a mono synth. In fact, six mono synths - one per pad.
Also, I found a guy on youtube who explains how to approach sound design with it. Very welcome to tackle the steep learning curve of new equipment.
One thing is a bit annoying, given that I'd like to program my sounds in Ableton just as much: There is no software from Clavia shipped with the Nord Drum.
But a hero wrote a Max4Live Device to control Nord Drum from within Ableton. This should do the job.
