#177 - 5th October 2024 - Riffing
Benjamin wants to do a Stoner EP.
He‘s in the mood and I figured - in a moment of arrogant hubris - that should be easy enough given how far we‘ve come with sound design, production know-how, taste and access to gear to choose from.
In a test to check how far I could get with a software amp but analog distortion, I wrote a little riff. It‘s called the Mormon March. 50% joking and 50% for real, I already said I‘d call a track Mormorgeddon. For some reason, I find the theme of a struggling, perhaps dying cult/religion/fiction interesting and fitting to Stoner Rock.
Anyway, turns out analog fuzz into digital amps works quite well and sounds fat.
The bass sound was a bit tricky. The strings on the Stingray are really dead so the overall recording needed substantial EQing.
And for the record, Asteroid is where Stoner started for me and it is still an all-time favorite.
