After having received the latest track feedback, I used the weekend to finalize all four tracks for which I promised a mixing job.
I also did the mastering, although I would not go as far as to say "I mastered". I merely made the tracks loud. To really make an informed decision about the steps involved in mastering a track, my listening situation isn't good enough and I guess also my hearing is not sufficiently developed.
To mitigate this, I got tools like Ozone and most importantly Tonal Balance Control and RealPhones to understand my low end better. Without it, the low end in my listening position would go through the roof compared to other systems. These tools help me understand it better, if when I'm not actually hearing it correctly.
From the four song medley attached to the post, the initial two are "final final". The last two are the versions that I shared today. So I expect a full feedback cycle before I'm done.
Any takeaways?
- Mixing in Logic is a nice change of scenery, away from Ableton.
- I used a preset of plugin chains for busses, reverbs, stereo bus and mastering which I employed in every track. I figured this would secure a coherence in sound. When listening to them back to back, I think that worked out quite alright.
- You can polish the turd to a degree. To be precise, the drum sounds were partially sub par and also a bit odd. I tried to make them better but there are limits. For one track, I advised on recording drums instead of using the samples that are currently in there. Funny enough, it's also the song that finally made me leave the project about 18 months ago.
- My shitty low budget but pimped up Frankenstein-style Squier Bass can be heard here and there. Played through the UAD Ampeg amp, it sits quite well in the mix.
Release is still scheduled for November, I just got that re-confirmed today.
