#156 - 14th September 2024 - sm7b is no U87
I knew it could happen. I even mentioned it but was too lazy to check for it and here I am.
The vocals recorded on Thursday sound very different from the initial recording.
Turns out, we recorded the initial version in December 2023 before I‘d gotten the U87 mic and the Neve Preamp.
Instead, the signal chain was SM7b into a LTL Silverbullet.
So what to do?
The Sonible Smart EQ can learn an EQ curve from a sample track and apply it to the signal.
I did this. It works alright and gets me closer. But now the highs are artificially boosted which gives me trouble with sibilants.
Right now the difference doesn’t put the listener off, but might come across like a wanted effect.
However, the more I think about it, the more I’m leaning towards just re-recording the whole thing.
