#138 - 27th August 2024 - Guess

Another day of sound design.

Another day with Sam Smyers. And yeah, he's not always on point with the sounds.

In this case, with the buzz sound from brat, it's only reminiscent.

The direction is good, but the original has this super thick distortion and the volume envelope also works differently. Actually quite wonky and not intuitive. Not in a way I would have dared to design it.

But that's what I like about it. Charli XCX is on top of her game. There is a very recent episode of Tape Notes with her and two of her producers. Not terribly insightful - but rather liberating to see, that they too work a whole day on a track, are super psyched and when they listen to it in the evening with a little distance, it turns out to be a bit shit and they wonder why.

So I'm not alone!

What I actually wanted to note is how specifically "Guess" has this Mr. Oizo vibe, that is a bit electro punk which I really like.

So here's the "Guess" bass and it's with the kick so it's not the bass.

Another thing worth mentioning: The kick is out of this world. With a subwoofer it can shine in its full glory and it just tears down walls. This is definitely and new reference track when it comes to low end.
