#135 - 24th August 2024 - OSTs
We‘ve watched a KEXP session of M83 this morning. I didn’t know them before, although Midnight City and Wait are pretty famous and everyone not living under a rock must have heard these tracks somewhere.
Their performance was a nice change to what you usually see these days. Not only does their music change from shoegaze to dream pop, they also had 5 people on the stage, each playing at least two instruments or a an instrument + vocals.
And big ass fat and heavy Hiwatt amps for guitar & bass ❤️
Compare this with Isle of Wight Festival for which quite a few recordings were just recently put online. Yes, there were some bands, but also a lot of backing only + vocals.
So naturally, I‘m happy to see there is budget and interest for bigger live productions even if your name is not Taylor Swift.
What I really liked about the m83 performance was the ambient and sound track like quality of what they played and how they played it. And it turns out the mastermind behind m83, Anthony Gonzalez, also makes film soundtracks.
And I‘m a sucker for good soundtracks. Great sound, music and ambient fx design is 50% of a good movie or video game - for me at least.
What appears on my all-time fav playlist?
Interstellar, og World of Warcraft, Bladerunner (2047), LaLaLand, Stranger Things 1st Season, The Dark Knight, and - obviously - Halo 1 to 3 (including ODST and Reach, the rest is not official canon afaic). More recent stuff? John Wick 4 comes to mind, and most certainly Dune.
Here is a list with some ambient-like tracks from me. And making music for a game is on my bucket list.
